The South #2

“Chivalry appears to be a Southern male characteristic. Bibb Latane and James Dabbs Jr., had a woman drop pencils or coins on elevators in Atlanta, Seattle, and Columbus, Ohio. Over two-thirds of Georgia men helped the damsel in distress; only a third of Yankee men did. But almost as many non-Southern men also hapless male, while only 12 percent of the Georgians did. Southern women also defer to male competence: they were as likely as non-Southern women to help another woman, but less that half as likely to help a male klutz. Of course things may have changed since 1979, when the study was published.”
